AI in Medicine Workshop Bridges Research and Innovation at Sorbonne and Heidelberg

September 11-13th, 2024 - Paris

From September 11th to 13th, 2024, Sorbonne University and Heidelberg University jointly hosted the inaugural workshop on Artificial Intelligence (AI) in medicine, under the 4EU+ European University Alliance. The workshop, themed “Optimised Trials with Machine Learning,” focused on how AI can revolutionize randomized clinical trials, enhancing statistical accuracy in evaluating medical interventions and diagnostics.

The event gathered leading researchers from Sorbonne, Heidelberg, and other prestigious institutions, attracting PhD and Master students from diverse disciplines, including medicine, biology, and computer science. Participants explored cutting-edge AI technologies and their applications in healthcare.

One highlight of the workshop was the contribution of a distinguished research group, which led a practical session on the challenges of causal modeling and utilzing specific neural networks for treatment effect estimation. Prof. Heuveline delivered a thought-provoking keynote address titled “AI in Medicine: Opportunities and Challenges, with Possible Side Effects.” Additionally, the group presented their research on “Discovering Predictive Biomarkers for Liver Staging Using Machine Learning Methods,” offering new insights into the use of AI for improving diagnostic accuracy in liver diseases.

The workshop successfully fostered collaboration and knowledge exchange, signaling exciting developments at the intersection of AI and medicine.
