The 12th European Conference on Mathematical and Theoretical Biology took place in Heidelberg, Germany, between September 19–23, 2022 and was a joint event organized by the European Society for Mathematical and Theoretical Biology (ESMTB) and the Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB) with Anna Marciniak-Czochra as the head of the organizing committee.
 

The meeting brings together researchers and students interested in mathematical modeling with applications to life sciences. The meeting was the first in-person ECMTB/SMB meeting since 2019 with an exciting line-up of plenary speakers, mini-symposia, as well as contributed oral and poster presentations with 640 on-site participants. Besides that, online participation was offered including live stream/webinar of plenary lectures and oral presentations. Online participants were invited to submit abstracts for consideration for an online poster.

This year’s contributions from EMCL have been manifold: Saskia Haupt and Vincent Heuveline have been part of the organizing committee for approximately one year. On top of that, Alexander Zeilmann, Valentin Schmid and Purusharth Saxena complemented the helpers team on-site with technical and organizational support.

From a scientific point of view, in the framework of the project “Mathematics in Oncology”, Saskia and Vincent together with Aysel Ahadova and Matthias Kloor from the ATB have successfully organized a mini-symposium titled “How to get a big picture of cancer? Recent advances in mathematical oncology”. The talks provided an overview of current research activities at the interface of mathematical modeling, scientific computing, and cancer research, bringing together scientists from different fields with the common aim of improving the understanding of cancer as a disease. In this mini-symposium, Saskia stood in for Matthias at short notice to present our project activities in Heidelberg. Further, Valentin and Saskia were highly active at the MathOnco poster session presenting our current activities in this direction and meeting many other MathOnco researchers around the world.
